Camping Adventure: Silver Lake, Bon Echo & Mazinaw Rock

AT A GLANCE !

There’s something magical about packing up the car, hitting the road, and spending a few nights under the stars. This summer, we set out on a 3-night camping adventure through Silver Lake Provincial Park and Bon Echo Provincial Park, Mazinaw Rock with a few scenic stops along the way. It was the perfect mix of sunshine, nature, and a little surprise from the weather

Weather: A Mix of Sunshine and Surprise

The trip was mostly filled with hot sunny days, perfect for swimming, hiking, and relaxing outdoors. But nature had its own plans too — a sudden rain shower added a dramatic twist near the end. It was short-lived, but enough to shift the mood and bring out the misty beauty of Bon Echo’s cliffs. That mix of sunshine and rain made the experience feel even more real and memorable.

Camping at Silver Lake Provincial Park

ucked away in eastern Ontario, Silver Lake Provincial Park is a peaceful spot with a cozy campground right by the water. The lake is calm and perfect for swimming, paddling, or just relaxing on the beach. The park is small but charming, with quiet trails and a laid-back vibe that makes it ideal for a relaxing getaway.

The campsites are well-maintained, and the sunsets over the lake are absolutely stunning. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, unplug, and enjoy the simple things — like roasting marshmallows or listening to loons call across the water.

Exploring Bon Echo Provincial Park

Bon Echo Provincial Park is a must-visit for anyone who loves dramatic landscapes and rich history. The highlight here is Mazinaw Rock, a towering cliff that rises over Mazinaw Lake, covered in ancient Indigenous pictographs. You can paddle right up to the rock or take a boat tour to get a closer look.

The park also offers great hiking trails, including the Clifftop Trail, which gives you a breathtaking view from the top of Mazinaw Rock. Even if you’re just stopping by, the scenery alone makes it worth the visit.

Mazinaw Rock: A Towering Natural Wonder

One of the most iconic sights in Bon Echo Provincial Park is Mazinaw Rock — a massive cliff rising 100 metres above Mazinaw Lake. This dramatic wall of granite stretches over 1.5 kilometres and is covered with more than 260 Indigenous pictographs, making it one of the largest visible collections in Canada.

You can paddle right up to the rock by canoe or kayak, or take a boat tour to get a closer look at the ancient artwork. The Clifftop Trail offers a challenging hike with a rewarding view from the top, where you can see the lake and surrounding forest from a whole new perspective.

Mazinaw Rock isn’t just a geological marvel — it’s a place where nature, history, and culture come together. Standing at its base or looking out from the top, you feel the deep connection this place holds for generations past and present.

Stargazing at Lennox & Addington Dark Sky Viewing Area

While Finlayson Point itself doesn’t have hiking trails, nearby spots like the Caribou Mountain Fire Tower and White Bear Forest offer excellent hiking and stunning views. The fire tower gives a panoramic look over Lake Temagami and the surrounding forest, especially beautiful during sunrise or sunset.

Local Culture and History

Bon Echo is rich in Indigenous history, especially around Mazinaw Rock, which features over 260 pictographs — one of the largest visible collections in Canada. The area also has a connection to Canadian literary history, with a tribute to poet Walt Whitman carved into the rock by early park supporters. These touches of culture and heritage add depth to the natural beauty and make the visit more meaningful.
